Currency | South Africa uses the Rand as currency. Keep in mind that you can only use the Rand to shop, dine and experience the province, so you’ll have to exchange to the local currency. |
Daylight | The average length of the day in November is 13h and 53min. On the first day of November, sunrise is at 05:45 and sunset is at 19:14. On the last day of November, sunrise is at 05:28 and sunset is at 19:41. |
Driving | An international driving licence is required when driving in South Africa. Drivers drive on the left hand side of the road and vehicles are right-hand drive. |
Electricity | The South African electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ. Power sockets are a three, round ring socket type, different to most countries around the world. Many hotels do have two-prong plug sockets, but we highly recommend you bring an adapter. |

Foreign Exchange | Money can be exchanged at the airport, commercial banks, Rennies Travel and American Express. These can be found in most shopping malls. You may also find exchange facilities in some hotels. Banking hours at 09:00 – 15:30 (weekdays), 08:30 – 11:00 (Saturdays), and are closed on Sundays and public holidays. Geography | South Africa is situated on the Southern tip of the African Continent. It shares neighbouring borders with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. South Africa encloses both Swaziland and Lesotho. South Africa has over 2700 km of Coastline shared between the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast and the warm Indian Ocean on the east coast. |
Gratuity | 10% is standard in bars and restaurants. For larger groups, restaurants may automatically add a 10% service charge to your invoice. |
Healthcare | South Africa has a well-developed healthcare system. There are both public and private hospitals throughout South Africa. Be sure to top up on medical insurance before leaving home. Well-qualified doctors, dentists and specialists can be found easily, but it is advisable to make an appointment unless it is an emergency. |
Internet Connectivity | The convention centre has wireless internet connectivity. Most hotels offer this in the rooms, but limitation or additional charges may apply. |
Language | South Africa has 11 official languages. English speakers will have no problem communicating with the majority of residents. |
Population | South Africa is home to a multi-cultural melting pot of over 60 million beautiful people of diverse origins, cultures, languages, and religions. The City of Cape Town has a population of over 4.8 million. |
Smoking | Smoking is banned in all public buildings in South Africa, including restaurants and bars. The Cape Town International Convention Centre is a non-smoking building. |
Taxes | Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15% is levied on all purchases and services. Foreign visitors can reclaim their VAT on departure at the airport on purchases in excess R250 per transaction, provided you present all your receipts. |
Time | South Africa Standard Time (SAST) is GMT + 2. There are no time zone differences within South Africa. |
Transport | The city centre, V&A Waterfront and the area around the convention centre are generally safe, but as with most large cities, it is best not to walk alone, particularly at night. Private taxis and Uber are readily available and can be booked via your hotel. Minibus taxis and MyCiti bus services are available, but best to seek advice from your hotel concierge. Vaccinations | All Covid-19 restrictions were repealed on 22 June 2022. No vaccinations are required for cholera, smallpox or malaria, however, it is advisable to check with your embassy if any other travel restrictions are in force. |

Water | Cape Town and the Western Cape’s tap water is among the best in the world and is safe to drink. Water saving is taken very seriously in the province, so please don’t waste water. |
