The City of Cape Town has a responsibility to issue Wayleaves, both internally to different Line Departments, as well as to private sector customers. The Wayleave process has been underpinned by the individual preference and experiences of each Service Department. To address the resultant drawbacks and support improved service delivery and City-wide investment, the City of Cape Town Municipality has embarked on a system to simplify the Wayleave application procedure and fast-track the approval process.
The strategy includes the introduction of an electronic Wayleave Management System that has been developed to replace the manual paper-based process. This new System will be launched to the public in June 2023.
The current multiple contact points and dependencies will be replaced with a single entry / single exit application process. This will further address the lack of standardisation (where different departments have different requirements). The introduction of this web-based Wayleave Management System will provide a coordinated, customer-centric platform – eliminating processing delays and customer frustrations. To ensure a seamless experience, all Wayleave Applications and subsequent Permit to Work Applications as well as Requests for Planning Information, will only be processed via this platform.
The South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) is a national system of innovation platform that seeks to fast-track the adoption of innovative and emerging sanitation technologies in South Africa through fostering local manufacturing and commercialization. The core strategy of the programme is to support and empower sanitation innovators (technology partners) and sanitation entrepreneurs (commercial partners). The SASTEP approach is hinged on the formation of collaborative partnership with sanitation innovators and entrepreneurs to ensure the translation of suitable and appropriate sanitation technologies to the marketplace. The programme was created by the Water Research Commission (WRC) in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and the Bill and Melinda Foundation (BMGF) and with the support of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). The programme is an operation vehicle of the WRC’s transformational vision SANiTi: Sanitation Transformation Initiative.
The Master Builders and Allied Trades Association Western Cape, known to most as “the MBAWC”, is a registered Trade Association for the Employers in the Building Industry.
Its membership comprises some 350 companies in the Western Cape, and includes: builders, building subcontractors, building merchants or manufacturers of building products, industry professionals and consultants. The Association was founded in 1891 and is, therefore, the oldest organisation of its kind in South Africa. It is affiliated to Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) but is autonomous. The MBAWC’s primary objective is to ensure that the reputation of the building industry in this area remains high and that investment in building is therefore attracted to it. It does this by insisting that its members work to the highest possible standards, aesthetically, technically and ethically – in short, that they conduct their business in a thoroughly professional manner at all times. Membership of the MBAWC is on a voluntary basis. Its members handle some 70% of all the building work in the Western Cape and employ a similar percentage of the total building industry workforce. Apart from campaigning tirelessly for continually higher standards, the Association also plays an active role in labour relations, the drawing up and adaptation of the building contract law, safety procedures and, most importantly, training. In the last field, particularly, the MBA Western Cape has for many years been the acknowledged leader. Some 50% of all the training done for the building industry nationwide takes place in the Western Cape – and it has a proud tradition of producing skilled and semi-skilled people who have worked on major projects all over Southern Africa. Because of its insistence on high standards, the MBAWC is always ready to attend to complaints about any of its members. For this reason – and the reasons given above – when using an MBAW member, the public can, in most instances, rely on getting an extremely fair deal.”
